Amazon Image Requirements: How to Ensure Amazon Compliance in 2025
Product images are incredibly important on Amazon. After all, how can your customers trust the quality of a product if they can’t look at it beforehand? As such, it’s no surprise that good-quality product photos should be a critical part of the Amazon seller’s toolkit. However, as we move into 2025, you want to ensure that your images comply with Amazon’s guidelines. Failure to do so might result in suppression of your products.
This blog will discuss the details of Amazon’s image requirements and how you can ensure compliance in 2025.
Why Do Amazon Product Images Matter?
Before we discuss Amazon’s product image requirements set forth by their Terms of Service, let’s discuss the importance of Amazon product images. Do they really matter? The short answer is yes—very much so!
To maximize click through rate, and ultimately sales, captivating product images are vital. Not only can a photo convey key product information that words alone can’t capture, but imaging can also highlight key features that set your product apart from competitors.
While the main product photo must be a standalone of the product on a white background, utilizing a mix of infographics and lifestyle images to support your main product image can help improve sales. While lifestyle photos help customers visualize the product’s use in their day-to-day lives, infographics can make complex charts and comparisons easily digestible.
In short, high-quality product images are your most powerful tool to attract potential buyers, convey value, and ultimately, convert shoppers into buyers.
2025 Amazon Product Image Requirements
To ensure compliance with Amazon in 2025, your product images must meet these requirements:
- Must match the title of your product and accurately depict the product you’re selling.
- Must not be pixelated, blurry, have jagged edges, or any other issues that compromise quality.
- Must not contain any sexually suggestive or inappropriate images, including nudity. If you are selling underwear, bathing suits, or leotards for children and babies, they must not be shown on a human model.
- The product itself must account for at least 85% of the image.
- Must not include trademarks, logos, or badges (including any variations) commonly used on Amazon, including but not limited to “Amazon Alexa,” “Top Seller,” “Best Seller,” “Works with Amazon Alexa,” “Amazon’s Choice,” “Premium Choice,” “Amazon,” “Alexa,” or “Prime.” You must also not use images that contain the use of or variations on the Amazon smile design.
- Must not be more than 10,000px on the longest side.
- Must be uploaded as either a JPEG, PNG, or TIFF.
As noted above, you can upload both PNG and TIFF files. However, Amazon prefers using JPEG (.jpeg or .jpg) whenever possible. This preference is because JPEGs usually maintain quality despite their smaller image size.
For zoom functionality (which can help boost your sales), Amazon recommends images be at least 1600px on the longest side. The minimum required for zoom to work is 1000px, though 1600px+ is ideal.
Remember, failure to adhere to these image requirements could lead to poor shopping experiences for your customers and suppression of your products. Frequent violations may even lead to issues with you selling on Amazon altogether.
Amazon Main Image Specifications
In addition to the product image requirements listed above, there’s also an additional subset of specifications required for your main image. The main image is the first photo your customers will see upon visiting your product page. It’s also the image that pops up in search results when customers search for your specific item or items similar to yours on Amazon.
Simply put, your main image is one of the most important images you’ll upload for your product, as it’s what grabs a buyer’s attention and brings them in. As such, you must comply with these main image specifications:
- Must be professional photos of your product — no illustrations, mockups, graphics, or placeholders allowed.
- Must be on a pure white background — no exceptions; the RGB color value is 255.
- Must not have multiple angles of the product — the item must be facing forward.
- Must not have watermarks, color blocks, text, logos, borders, or any other graphic either on the product or in the background.
- Must not include images of the product in its original packaging — unless it’s important to showcase the product.
- Must show the entirety of the product – no photos that are cut off or touching the edge of the frame (jewelry is the exception).
- If selling clothing accessories, the main images must not show any part of the mannequin it is displayed on.
- Images of products that come in a multi-pack (such as apparel) or with accessories must be in the style of a flat-lay.
- If selling child or baby clothing, they must be in the style of a flat-lay. This flat-lay requirement applies to the main image only.
- Additional images can include lifestyle shots and modeled photos as long as they follow Amazon’s child safety guidelines.
- If selling shoes, the main photo should show off a single shoe, facing left, and at a 45-degree angle.
- If selling apparel, they must all be shown on a standing human model.
- Must not include a human model in certain poses, including sitting, leaning, kneeling, or lying down.
Remember that images of human models using assistive technology such as wheelchairs or having arm/leg prosthetics are encouraged in main photos when possible.
Additional Image Guidelines
Amazon’s product image requirements go beyond the technical specs. To truly connect with potential buyers, your images should help them envision how the product fits into their everyday lives. This is where lifestyle images come in—showing the product in use or in a real-world setting can significantly influence purchasing decisions.
That said, it’s important to keep your visuals honest. While tools like Photoshop or AI can enhance image quality, using them to alter the product’s appearance—such as adding fake textures, unnatural colors, or exaggerated proportions—violates Amazon’s guidelines. Your goal should be to present the product as accurately as possible to build credibility and trust with shoppers.
3 Common Amazon Product Image Mistakes
The use of AI or photo editing software is just one of the common mistakes Amazon sellers make with their photos. Here are three others to avoid:
1. Not Having Enough Photos
Far too many Amazon sellers make the mistake of having only one or two product photos, whether they lack time or falsely think it doesn’t matter.
Amazon lets sellers upload a total of nine images, with the first serving as your main image and the remaining eight highlighting alternate angles, key features, and lifestyle photos. Be sure to use all the slots offered to you!
Not only will having more photos instill confidence in your buyers, but it will also keep them engaged and on your page longer. This decreases the bounce rate and generates more organic exposure.
2. Failing to Treat Product Photos As Part of Your SEO Strategy
Another common pitfall sellers make is failing to treat their product photos as a vital part of their Amazon SEO strategy. Photos are an integral part of search engine optimization, so ensuring that your photos are sized appropriately is a huge piece of the puzzle. However, it’s not the only piece.
In addition to proper sizing, use your photos to increase your organic search ranking by adding alt text. Alt text refers to descriptions, which can include keywords for your products. Alt text is designed to help those with visual impairment. However, adding keywords in your photos can help capture search queues, too.
Including these recommendations, as well as using proper lighting, are all important aspects of reaching as many people and ensuring that they have a seamless, but positive shopping experience.
3. Using Unrealistic Images
Many brands fall into the trap of overdesigning their product images or opting for overly stylized, artistic shots. While creativity has its place, shoppers are ultimately looking for clear, accurate visuals that reflect the real product. That’s why simplicity and clarity should guide your image selection process.
Today’s consumers also want to see themselves in the products they buy—representation matters. Stick to Amazon’s guidelines and save the storytelling for your product descriptions—or better yet, partner with an Amazon marketing agency that can help you deliver the right message and drive real results.
